Sustainability in action with HostCo @ The University of Sydney

At Venue Crew, we’re fortunate to work with some of the most forward-thinking venues in the industry, and HostCo @ The University of Sydney is a standout when it comes to sustainability. Their commitment to eco-friendly practices isn’t just about checking boxes: it’s about creating meaningful change that benefits both the environment and the community.

Sustainability is more than a goal for HostCo: it’s part of who they are, reflected in thoughtful practices that support events that are gentle to both people and the planet. From sourcing local ingredients to reducing waste, HostCo is setting a new standard for sustainable events. Here’s how they’re putting sustainability into action in 2025, one event at a time.

HostCo’s commitment to a greener future: their actions

Turning waste into opportunity

In collaboration with the University of Sydney Grounds team, HostCo has introduced an organic waste recovery program in the Holme Building. This initiative helps divert food scraps from landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting composting efforts.

Sustainable sourcing for a healthier planet

HostCo prioritises locally produced ingredients to reduce transportation emissions and support regional farmers, minimising the carbon footprint of every event. Complementing this, all menus feature vegan, plant-based, and vegetarian options.

Reducing food waste

Surplus food at HostCo never goes to waste. Excess food is regularly donated to the University of Sydney Food Hub, providing vital support to students facing financial or food insecurity.

Reusable and compostable servingware

HostCo reduces single-use waste by offering reusable utensils and servingware on-site. When disposable items are necessary, BioPak compostable tableware and packaging are used, ensuring a lower environmental impact. Furthermore, HostCo is committed to the City of Sydney’s Zero Waste and Single-Use Plastics Pledge. This includes using the Bettercup recycling system at outdoor bar events to reduce waste and promote responsible recycling practices.

Supporting social enterprises

For HostCo, sustainability extends beyond the environment to support the community. The team participates in regular volunteer events with organisations such as OzHarvest, Eat Up Australia, FoodLab Sydney, and Foodbank. Additionally, HostCo’s coffee, supplied by Vittoria Coffee, is Rainforest Alliance Fairtrade certified, with $1 from every bag sold donated directly to OzHarvest.

Reducing paper waste

HostCo minimises paper waste by prioritising digital communication. From digital menus to electronic event materials, there’s a strong focus on reducing reliance on printed resources.

Energy efficiency through smart operations

HostCo schedules kitchen operations for optimal energy efficiency and provides regular staff training to reduce energy consumption. This approach not only lowers environmental impact but also promotes sustainable operational practices.

For event planners aspiring to create more eco-friendly events, we spoke to Helen Tzovaras, HostCo’s Sales & Events Executive. She suggested “sourcing locally, eliminating single-use plastics, setting up effective waste management systems, and using digital communications to reduce paper usage.”

Measuring the impact

HostCo’s commitment to sustainability isn’t just about words: it’s backed by action. The graph below highlights the tangible impact of their eco-friendly initiatives.
